| The purpose of the Office of the County Historian is to collect, preserve and interpret Livingston County’s documentary heritage and manage historic records for the public. |
| The County Historian provides guidance and support to the 17 Town Historians of Livingston County, assists the general public on research projects, publishes a quarterly newsletter “Out of the Archives”, sets up displays on topics of historic significance, attends events, and is available to give talks on subjects of historical interest to various groups. |
| The research center is open to the public and has an extensive collection of books on local history, newspapers on microfilm (1824 – present), census and naturalization records, veteran’s files, photographs, maps, genealogy files, cemetery surveys, and various other archival materials pertaining to the history of Livingston County. |
